“By the foot of Slottsfjellet (Castle cliff) in Tønsberg this statue of Princess Christina Haakonsdotter of Norway can be found. This statue is actually a copy of a statue unveiled in 1978 in Covarrubias, Spain, where the sarcophagus containing the remains of the princess is located. The original statue was made by Norwegian sculptor Brit Sørensen (1923-2008).

The history of Christina Haakonsdotter, the way I’ve often heard it, is a sad one. A daughter of king Haakon IV Haakonson of Norway, she was betrothed to Infante Philip of Castile, brother of King Alfonso X of Castile, against her will, and travelled from Tønsberg to arrive at Las Huelgas in Burgos on Christmas Eve of 1257. Philip and Christina then married in March of 1258 and the couple lived in Sevilla until she died childless at the age of 28. Supposedly, she pined so much for Norway that it killed her in the end.”
